Lot 2993
Theophilos Theophilitzes, patrikios and praipositos, 11th century. Seal (Lead, 20 mm, 5.64 g, 12 h). O - ΓЄ/Ⲱ/P-Γ/I/O/C Nimbate facing bust of Saint George, holding a spear over his right shoulder, and resting a shield on his left arm. Rev. ΘKЄ RO/H(Θ) T’ C’ Δ૪(Λ) Θ…/ΦI(Λ) ΠPIK, ΠP/AIΠ TⲰ ΘⲰΦIΛITZH in five lines. Unpublished in the standard references. Flan fault on the edge, otherwise, good very fine.

From an important collection of Roman and Byzantine seals, tesserae and amulets, formed before 2021.

Theophilitzes is a diminutive form of Theophilos, the name that appears as the seal owner's personal name earlier in the legend. It is therefore likely that he is adding his sobriquet ('little Theophilos'), rather than his family name.
